Welcome to Holland!

Holland or The Netherlands or 'Nederland' as the dutch call it is a modern northern european country. The Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east.

There are 16 million inhabitants in this small country, making it one of the most densily populated countries in the world. There are no major cities with over 1 million inhabitants. Although the four major cities Amsterdam, Den Haag (The Hague in English), Rotterdam and Utrecht are all situated within a 1 hour drive from each other. These four cities can in many ways be regarded as one 'big city' agglomeration, which the Dutch call: Randstad ('fringe city').

A remarkable aspect of the Netherlands is the flatness of the country. About half of its surface area is less than 1 metre above sea level, and large parts of it are actually below sea level and have been reclaimed from the Sea.
